Jean Claude Michel

1937-2017

Surrounded by his family and loved ones, Jean-Claude Andre Michel passed away on August 19, 2017 after a valiant battle with cancer.  Jean Claude entered the world on February 27, 1937, the 5th son born to Andre Michel and Laure Armand Michel.  Although, born to a large family of 9 sisters and brothers, even as a child, Jean Claude was an individual and always went his own way.

Jean Claude is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joestecy Michel, and his daughters, Neyida Michel, Monia Michel, Temo and Tamara Michel Josserand.  Beloved husband, father, stepfather, brother, uncle, professor, teacher, mentor and friend, Jean Claude touched many lives with a generosity of spirit and willingness to guide, and give advice and support to those in need of assistance.

A lifelong scholar, Jean Claude completed his legal training in Port-au-Prince where he received his Diplome de Licencie en Droit degree from Universite D’Etat.  He later went on to receive his Master’s Degree from Brooklyn College, and then his Ph. D from the City University of New York in French Literature.  Over the course of his career, he taught and lectured throughout the country, including; serving on the faculty at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA, serving on the faculty at Hunter College in New York, NY, as well as serving on the faculty at Miami International University.  Jean Claude possessed a keen belief in the power of education to transform lives, and over the years, he also taught in the New York City Public Schools as well as the Miami Dade Public Schools.  Years later, after retiring, he went back to Haiti to practice law.  One of the many highlights of his career was the publishing of his book, “Les Ecrivains Noir et Les Surrealistes” as well as being inducted to the National Foreign Language honor society, Phi Sigma Iota.

While possessing a keen intellect, Jean Claude will be best remembered for his friendly, warm spirit, his willingness to celebrate and lead a celebration at a moment’s notice, and passion for making the voices of those less fortunate heard.

Jean Claude was preceded in the afterlife by his brothers and sisters; Gerard Michel, Gisele Michel Peck, Fritz Michel, Andre (Aguy) Michel, Herve Michel, and Jacques Michel.

In addition to his immediate family, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, he leaves behind his beloved brother and sisters; Joseph (Joe) Michel, Madeleine Michel Jean-Louis, and Laure (Seurette)Michel Joseph.

A memorial service and reception will be held to celebrate his life on Sunday, August 27th at St Forts Funeral Home at 16480 N.E. 19th Avenue, N. Miami Beach.
