Obituary

Sylvain Saintfleur

December 1, 1949– November 29, 2017

“Those we love can never be more than a thought away…for as long as there’s a memory, they live in our hearts to stay.”

Sylvain Saintfleur was born on December 1, 1949 in Gonaives, Haiti, the 3rd child of the late Ceradieu Saintfleur and Docina Janvier. He is remembered as a loving and outgoing man. He was a true provider who loved his family and was always willing to help others.

Sylvain was treasured from an early age by his family and friends which included his siblings: Caricine Olibris, Ceramise Ambroise, Falestine Pierre-Charles, Janice St. Fleur, Eliana St. Victor, and Marie Violet Charleston; as well as his lifelong friends, Bony Andre, Larsen Julmus, Colimeau Brutus, and Laurent Rodrigue. His 3 children, Wilner Saintfleur, Reno Saintfleur, and Diana Matthews bought him the most joy.

The love for his children was only rivaled by that of the love of his life, Marie Jean-Baptiste, who he made his wife on December 22, 1979 when they became one and she took his last name. She remained his dutiful wife for 37 years and still carries him in her heart, in her memories, and in the spirit of their children and grandchildren.

At 4:55pm on November 29, 2017, Sylvain transitioned from his earthly form at Northside Hospital in Miami, Florida. He was 67 years old. As a Christian and devout Catholic, Sylvain knew that a place had already been prepared for him and knew of God’s promise of a time beyond the present in Revelation 21:4 that “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Sylvain earned his high school diploma then attended D.A, Dorsey Educational Center after migrating to the United States. He was employed as a teacher’s aide at Lindsey Hopkins Education Center where he retired from in March 2015 after 35 years.

In his spare-time, Sylvain enjoyed watching Miami Heat Basketball, Miami Dolphins Football, playing dominoes, socializing with friends and family, and of course, going to Church and singing in the Church choir. He also took his physical fitness seriously and could be found at the gym every morning or on his daily walks. Sylvain will also be remembered as one who loved to joke around and could often be heard singing around the house. He also took great interest in keeping his environment clean and seemed to enjoy such mundane activities as raking the leaves in his yard.

Sylvain Saintfleur is survived by his wife, Marie Saintfleur; his sons, Wilner Saintfleur and daughter-in-law, Jhalaine, and Reno Saintfleur; his; his daughter Diana Matthews and son-in-law Shevin Matthews; his gradchildren: Tristan, Jeremiah, Lily, Paige, Nathan, Sarah, Alysha, Edhan; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to thank everyone who showed support during this time of extraordinary grief and encourages you to keep Sylvain’s memory alive.

A visitation with the family and viewing of the body of Sylvain Saintfleur will take place on Friday December 8, 2017 from 5pm to 9pm at St. Fort’s Funeral Home. The funeral service for Sylvain Saintfleur will be held at Notre Dame D’Haiti Catholic Church at 2pm, officiated by Father Reginald Jean-Mary. His burial at Southern Memorial Park follows immediately after, with his sons Wilner and Reno Saintfleur serving as pallbearers. The family invites you to return to St. Fort’s Funeral Home for a reception in his honor.
